Guy orders a cappuccino everyday before work at a time when making good coffee was hard. Somedays the coffee is good. Some days it’s bad. Guy wonders, “what if my coffee was just good every time?” He opens a cafe and pays attention to the coffee. Wow. It’s good every time. The people come. They are happy. But he wasn't satisfied.

Working with people is hard. He studies leadership. Neat. It’s no longer just about the coffee. He wants to build a nice place to work. He hires happy baristas and the coffee and happy baristas make the people who visit the cafe happy. This is good. He is pleased, but there’s still lots to do. And he's still not satisfied.

At Honest to Pete, we love coffee. Not just the liquid itself, but what it means in people’s lives. The way it plays a part in important moments, and ordinary ones.
Slow Sunday mornings, promising first dates, long-overdue catch ups with dear friends. Lingering after great dinners that no one wants to see end. Coffee bookends our days, waking us up in the morning and winding us down at night.

Those coffee-infused moments punctuate our founder Peter’s life too, starting way back when he was a kid surreptitiously sipping the leftover dregs after his parents’ dinner parties. He didn’t set out to start a coffee company. He just wanted a roast that reminded him of the coffee he first fell in love with: bold, unpretentious, familiar. He experimented with small roasters, then slightly bigger ones. He tried out green beans from one place, then from another. Eventually, he happened upon the taste he was after. The people in his life loved it too, and he wondered if he might be onto something. Peter’s perfectly nostalgic roast became Retrospresso, and his hobby evolved into an honest-to-goodness business. And here we are.

Cultivate sources tea from small producers who continue to find ways of maintaining traditional methods of harvesting and making tea throughout China. I opened Cultivate in Vancouver in 2014, as a place where people could come to appreciate these special teas and take time to enjoy their preparation. If I consider how Cultivate was started, and why it continues, I must mention that I was not always a tea drinker – I wandered into a tea shop in Beijing in 2010, and in doing so, I wandered into my appreciation for tea. It is fitting that, in opening Cultivate, I should come to hold the door of a tea shop open to others – especially to those who may have not yet met tea.

Established in 2015, we’re a Vancouver-based, premium Japanese matcha curator, tea cafe & matcha lifestyle brand. In the past years, we’ve traveled throughout Japan to find the best and the most unique matcha on the market. WHAT IS IMPRO THEATRE?
Impro or Improv? And what’s the difference?

Both Impro and Improv are short for Improvisation. Keith Johnstone’s seminal book where he laid out many of the theories, practices and games that are still used today, is called IMPRO. Keith began his work at the Royal Court Theatre in London, eventually taking it to the streets around Europe, and this was the shortened term they used. Meanwhile, as groups started appearing in the US, they adopted “improv”. To this day, Impro is more commonly used in Europe, while Improv has spread throughout the US and Canada.

We have chosen Impro for our work at the Tightrope Studio & Theatre, because our work is deeply rooted in the work of our friend and mentor Keith. It connects us to not only the long tradition of theatrical improvisation, but also of using improvisation as a technique for creating and training in theatre. 

By calling our work Impro Theatre, we hope to make Tightrope a home for other theatre techniques like mask, clown, movement, puppetry, dance, video, and performance art. We envision Tightrope as a place  where audiences can experience not just deep belly-laughs and squeals, but the full range of human emotions, stories and experiences.

ABOUT
The James Black Gallery is an artist-run centre operating in Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver, BC located on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territories of the  xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwu7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The JBG presents exhibitions of early career artists, provides studio space to members of our collective, has a project space showcasing saleable art, and hosts interdisciplinary events. When funding permits, we run a pod residency series for local artists. The JBG has been operating collectively since December 2014 and is located in a heritage building (est. 1889).

Vancouver Special is a retail store offering a carefully edited and hand picked selection of contemporary furniture, sofas, design objects, household accessories, and art and architecture books. Our aim is to promote the idea that good design can be accessible, affordable, of high quality and bring pleasure to daily life. We opened in 2008 in the heart of Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

We are a local, independent family-owned business. It is owner-operated by recovered-architect and design advocate Anne Pearson. She is constantly researching, teaching, and traveling in order to provide an inspiring and constantly evolving product mix. She is inspired by the design traditions of Scandinavia and Japan and the shop's collection reflects those aesthetics.

Anne is highly involved in the Vancouver design community. She is the co-producer of the Vancouver Architecture and Design Film Festival (ADFF) and is passionate about showcasing design documentaries to the local design community and also the general public. She is also a founding member of "Party for Architects", and is an ongoing guest critic at Emily Carr University and SALA (School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture) at UBC.

While the cornerstones of the menu remain unchanged for over a century, many recipes have evolved through time and travel, into a beautiful balance of traditional and contemporary cuisine. The spirit of tradition runs deep at Nuba but not at the expense of our desire to provide our guests with a new and exciting dining experience.

Tacofino is a West Coast restaurant group that started in Tofino, BC, in 2009 from a food truck operating behind a surf shop. It is known for its fresh, locally sourced, and West Coast-inspired Mexican food, including its popular fish tacos. The company has since grown to include multiple restaurants and food trucks across Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

Blaze Burgers is a reliable Mount Pleasant favourite, serving up juicy, well-crafted burgers in a relaxed and friendly space. Blaze Gourmet Burgers started as a ghost kitchen in Mount Pleasant during the challenging times of COVID-19. With just one order a day, we remained confident that our commitment to using only the highest-quality ingredients and the freshest products would win Vancouver’s heart—and we were right! Within just three months, we grew to over 30 orders daily, a milestone we’re incredibly proud of.

Swiss Bakery

Chef Elena Krasnova was born in Russia and grew up during the “Perestroika” era when bare necessities were in great demand. It at this time that she developed her ability and desire to express herself through artistic means, creating something from nothing – reflected in her culinary creations today.

In her early twenties, Elena moved to Vancouver, Canada where she attended university, collecting several degrees prior to pursuing her passion for pastry in France. It was during her studies at the famed Ferrandie Ecole de Gastronomie in Paris that Elena found her true calling.

Elena’s pastry and confectionary creations can be seen in esteemed North American and European publications showcasing her unique and artistic style and garnering her the attention of top pastry chefs everywhere.

Chef Elena is thrilled to be opening Mon Paris Patisserie in Early 2017, her first standalone shop located just outside Vancouver. With more than 1000 square feet of space, complete with small café, Elena will have plenty of room to create and showcase her exquisite pastries, chocolates and desserts.

Faculty Brewing Co. was created to be an inclusive and open environment for beer drinkers of any level to enjoy and learn more about craft beer.

Faculty Brewing is the brainchild of Mauricio, the original head brewer, and Alicia, the architect behind the brewery's design. Seeing a need to make craft beer more accessible to the masses, they found their perfect location in the former space of the bicycle shop Pedal Bike Depot.

The Faculty name was born out of Mauricio's experience as a professor, the wish to educate and empower people with craft beer knowledge, and the idea that the brewery would share all the information behind the brewing process, including the recipes. We aim to work with other breweries and local home brewers to test new recipes and experiment with innovative ideas. Like a university or college, Faculty Brewing Co. is meant to be a place of idea-sharing and collaboration.

 

At the same time, in 2015, Oddity Kombucha was created across the street in 1863 Ontario. Oddity is still brewed at this location and served across the street at Faculty and other places around Vancouver. The Faculty & Oddity team is now made up of around 20 wonderful people.

As craft beer exploded in BC – so did we! Opening its doors in 2013, the Steamworks Burnaby Brewery and Taproom on William St is now our second home. This sprawling production facility houses all the moving parts (both human and mechanical) that work to produce thousands and thousands of barrels and hectolitres of craft beer every year.

With brewers and cellar folks, silos, and fermenters bursting and bustling out of the brew house, and a state-of-the-art canning line that whirls and twirls its way up, down, and all around, we’ve grown –  but we’ve never lost sight of our roots as the small steam-powered brewery from the heart of Vancouver.
